Clay Huntington

Station Owner

Clay Huntington is a Pacific Northwest radio and TV pioneer. He started his radio

career in 1941 with a 15-minute sportscast. His play-by-play broadcasts of

baseball, football, and basketball games were featured on a half dozen Puget

Sound stations for over 50 years. His television sportscasts covering football,

baseball, basketball and hockey for nearly 40 years were carried on a number

of Northwest TV stations including channels 11 and 13.

His radio station ownership started in 1960 and has included four stations, all

with the KLAY call letters. The current station, 1180 AM, began operation in 1991

and features local and national talk and news plus complete coverage of local

sports including Tacoma Rainier's baseball, Tacoma Sabercats hockey, Pacific

Lutheran University football and basketball plus selected local high school football

and basketball games.

Called Tacoma's all-purpose ambassador and sports treasure, his radio and

television sportscasting career has extended a span of nearly 60 years. His other

accomplishments included a five-year stint as a sports writer for the old Tacoma

Times, a daily newspaper that suspended publication in 1949. He also was one

of the founders of the Tacoma Athletic Commission in the 1940's. His signature

sports feat was the establishment of the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.
